Info about the Youth Leadership and Community Service Summer Camp

Every summer, Peace Corps Volunteer led camps generate a lot of interest in the Kyrgyz Republic. In an effort to make this popular educational opportunity more sustainable, a local village would like to host this year’s area summer camp. Recognizing students’ potential, this camp will focus on “Leadership and Community Service,” two topics that will positively influence young participants (ages 10-12). Students will partake in a number of life skills activities aimed at enhancing their sense of leadership. Also, camp participants will create their own local volunteer projects, which they will execute the last day of camp. An overarching objective of this camp is to help students realize the life-long benefits of community service.

An added dimension of skills transfer comes in the form of training 10 secondary level students to volunteer as additional camp leaders. A handful of these students have attended past Peace Corps camps and are ready to pass along the life skills training they deem valuable. With the support of Peace Corps Volunteers, all student leaders will have specific responsibilities in the delivery of camp sessions, activities, and chaperoning.

Access to the School’s facilities accounts for a majority of the community contribution. Select community members will also volunteer their time in helping to prepare daily meals and in assisting with translation throughout the duration of the camp. However, outside funding is still needed to help cover the cost of food, transportation, and other camp materials.
