Info about the Village Maternity

The aim of this project is to construct a local maternity clinic in a village in the Sikasso region of Mali. The village is located over 10km from the nearest town with adequate health care facilities for women to give birth. The current situation calls for the women of the village to make the 10km trip when they go into labor. As a result, many women in the village are forced to give birth in the unsanitary conditions of a village house.

The maternity clinic will be based upon the model commonly accepted by the people in Mali. The clinic will be comprised of four rooms: an office, dispensary, birthing room and an infirmary. A respected and educated woman in the village is currently being trained as a matron at a certified health school in a nearby town. A male medical aid will also be trained to assist the matron with other medical emergencies and with the organization and upkeep of the clinic.

The people of the village have initiated this project and donated a nearby plot of land suitable for the building’s construction. They have further volunteered their labor, raw materials, and other resources to support the project, representing over forty percent of the total project cost.

This Peace Corps Partnership Proposal asks for the funds necessary to buy the materials for the construction of the maternity clinic. The construction will be completed by local contractors and village labor, and the medical supplies will be maintained by local contributions after the completion of the facility.

The people of the village are motivated and excited at the prospect of having a clinic facility in the village and truly believe it will be a big step in improving their lives.
