I entered Guatemala in late 1980 with the first team of fisheries volonteers trained in Norman, Oklahoma (Evelyn Hawk and Jim Morris). There were no fish in my mountain site, La Union, Zacapa, when I started...and I left plenty of Tilapia behind, as well as some breeding stock of Carp. But the best part was the social life, with the jovenes -- young women and young men. I played on the women's basketball team and consequently, we made the rounds of ferias.
It was also a scary time. There were three coups d'etats and plenty of massacres in the highlands during our period of service..although out in La Union it seemed to be a distant problem.
After business school at Thunderbird, I returned to Peace Corps as a Fellow for the Africa Region, taking assignments in Burkina Faso and Mali, and finally ending up in the Central African Republic as APCD for Agriculture and Rural Development under PCDs Paul Olson and Michael Blake.
