The town of Tchamba is not only an agricultural center, but also the site of a busy central market, with streets lined with stores, tailor shops, food vendors. Its population includes skilled laborers as well as merchants and farmers.Educational facilities included one high school, seven middle schools and fifteen elementary schools. Children who do not attend school either work as apprentices to learn a trade or work in the fields. The community has determined that there is a lack of athletic facilities in this town. Young people frequently complain of having nothing fun to do. While Tchamba offers many modern menities, such as electricity, running water, phone lines, cell phone access, athletics have been slow to develop. Building a basketball court will help add diversity and team building to the development of these young people.. The proposed court will be adjacent to one of Tchamba's middle schools. The students will provide the necessary labor for the initial clearing of the site, a well as unskilled laboar during construction. The Parents Association, in conjunction with the Association for the Promotion of Sports, have raised money to pay forthe necessary skilled labor. Since basketball is a sport that requires teamwork, the opportunity to focus of this concept is an asset in the development of young people. Teamwork and physical skill development will be a valuable addition to the school athletic program. Other local youth will also have access to the benefits through workshops and leagues. Values learned on a playing field include lifelong self-confidence, determination and ambition, all of which are important in youth development anywhere.
