Nothing compares to being an outer island volunteer. The language, relationships and sense of humor I developed my first two years were integral to any successes in my extension year. Working with the Tonga Preschool Association, we were able to get early childhood education as a priority for the Ministry of Education and help the government take the initial steps needed to develop an infrastructure for the program's future. During my time as a volunteer we loss volunteer Tessa Horan (Feb 2006); The King, Taufa'ahau Tupou IV died and his eldest son, King Siaosi Tupou V, succeeded him. (Sept 2006); Rioting connected to a democracy rally caused the destruction of most of downtown Nuku'alofa. The day was later called "Black Thursday" (Nov 11 2006).
