Info about the Secondary School Resource Center

The goal of this project is to improve English language instruction in a small town in Ukraine. We would like to buy new textbooks for the secondary school, as the textbooks currently used are out of date, filled with grammatical mistakes and, in some cases, racially insensitive drawings and texts.

The new books will be from the Longman series. These books are modern, published in England, and feature many lessons on social issues. The books will enable students to study English at a much more advanced level and to learn without the mistakes which are so inherent in the current books. English learning is vital to students in Ukraine in order for them to pursue higher career goals.

In this small town with few resources, teachers have been trying for years to buy new books for their students, but are never able to buy enough copies. Thus students end up sharing books or studying from different books which are poorly matched to each other. The teachers are very eager to work with the new books. They have agreed to arrange a series of training seminars on use of the textbooks for teachers from nearby villages. Copies of the books will also be available for loan to teachers from nearby village schools.
