Info about the School Improvements
The goal of this project is to improve the overall quality of life for the students attending one of fourteen primary schools in a city in Mauritania. There are two main objectives associated with this project. The first is to provide a sufficient and cost-effective water resource to the school by repairing the existing well that is on school grounds. The reparation of the well will provide the students with educational activities such as school gardens and tree nurseries. These activities will increase their knowledge of proper nutrition and their awareness of the environment.
The second objective is to repair the latrines in order to provide a safe and private place for the students to relieve themselves. Currently, the students who do not live nearby have to either relieve themselves in an alley along the dirt road or behind the buildings at the school within the compound. This behavior brings on numerous health concerns and interferes to a high degree with the students' education. The community would also like to make other school improvements such as reparations of desks and blackboards.
At the first reference to the need of a community contribution, the director immediately suggested the school's parents' association (APE). They have agreed to pay for 25% of the repairs in the form of both materials and labor. These reparations will both contribute to a healthier school and a more productive learning environment.
