Info about the School Improvement

Funding is a constant struggle for the public schools of Tanzania. This is especially true in the villages where life, for the most part, is hand-to-mouth. When school leaders want to make improvements to the school, such as building bigger classrooms for its already overcrowded classes, the task at hand is huge.

In 2004 our Primary School started the construction of two new classrooms, a new teachers lounge, library, and storage room. The community leaders in charge of the project sought out local funding and the use of local supplies and skilled workers. After four years of building and dreaming the school has run out of money, as well as ideas to fundraise in order to finish the project.

Construction is almost complete, but due to the inflation of cost in raw materials, skilled labor and the distance of the village from a town in which most of the necessary supplies are available, it has not been finished. As of today the entire frame of the building, as well as the roof has been finished. The two classrooms and teachers lounge are being used, but the library, one other classroom, and storage room still need windows, doors and floor cement.

The community leaders have asked for additional funding assistance from the government, however, this money has only helped to cover a small part of the remaining costs. The school budget is able to cover $936.84 of the remaining supplies and is asking for $2,851 to purchase all of the rest and finally finish this project.
