Info about the Rural Health Center

A vibrant farming community in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania provides much of the workforce for the surrounding international tea and lumber companies. The resulting influx of workers from across Tanzania has severely impacted the spread of HIV and disease in the area, straining the resources of existing health facilities, the nearest of which is 24 km from the village. With nearly 18% of the local population testing positive for HIV, a decrease in the adult population due to the spread of the virus, and burgeoning health problems related to sanitation and a lack of preventative care, the village is sorely in need of a Rural Health Center to meet the health needs of the community.

The Health Center will provide medical and dental services to the village as well as villages within a 15km radius. The Center will also serve as a setting for community members to learn about preventative health, care for people living with HIV/AIDS, nutrition for children, life skills and environmental sanitation. Additionally, once the center has been built, the district government will support the Center with all necessary staff and supplies.
