The goal of this project is to open a public library and multi-media center in village where, until this point, there has been no public access to books or computers for either research or leisure purposes.
The community boasts a population of over 20,000 spread across 53 villages and while it is rich in agricultural production, it lacks any kind of multi-media or academic resources outside the local school system.
This library/multi-media center will provide an outreach opportunity to both local students and community members who may have little to no educational background.
Thanks to a generous donation, books are already available for this library, and a partnership with the local high school provides a workable space for the center. The project intends to complete construction of a building and outfit it with library materials such as shelves, tables, computer work areas, etc.
While simple in form and idea, the impact of this project is immense to a community which finds itself geographically and often socially isolated from all neighboring cities. The realization of this project will provide a much-needed link to the broader socio-economic environment of Cameroon. Additionally, the possibility of a public internet service will enhance communication and networking opportunities while the availability of quality texts in French will be a first important step to expanding horizons far beyond the leafy reach of daily life in the tropical rainforest.
