Worked with coops and credit unions in Corozal District. Major coops were Patchakan, Concepcion, San Joaquin, Caledonia. Was an officer of the Department of Cooperatives and worked with Frank Chan for most of my term, also with Jesus Ken in the last few months. Silas Cayetano was Registrar of Cooperatives at this time.
Coops were in small Mayan villages around Corozal town. Main job was helping villagers to form coops, get funding for projects, teaching bookkeeping, working with Agricultural Dept on projects.
Main problem was the formation of coops was driven not by a business reason, but to obtain land from the government. Local Representatives would promise to help villagers to get land for farming in return for votes. The catch was they had to form a coop, embrace "modern" farming practices, take on debt to buy seed, rent tractors etc. Harvests were low yield (little fertilizer and no herbicides or insecticides were used (not enough money) and the coop members would end up in debt at the end.
Wrote paper outlining problem. it was typed up and presented to the Minister of Agriculture, Lands and Cooperatives thanks to Charlie Woods, the local head of CARE and formerly Registrar of Coops.
Understand through Frank Chan, that some of my suggestions were implemented and the coop system was reorganized.
I loved the people of Corozal and the villages. I felt that I probably got more value from the experience than I was able to return in help.
