The primary vision for this Primary School Library is to dramatically raise literacy rates in the village by exposing the community to a print-rich environment, where a love of reading can be cultivated and books can be referenced and researched for information. Presently, illiteracy rates are rampant simply because there is little exposure to written information in the community. There are no community newspapers, newsletters, magazines or advertisements, and there are a limited number of signs. The nearest post office is 3km in the next village, and few villagers receive written material in their postal boxes. This crucial lack of exposure to written material has put students, teachers and community members at a disadvantage in a global, literate society.
The objective of this project is to end the social backlog that continues to deprive the school and community the opportunity to thrive and compete with urban societies. Through the use of a library as literacy hub, this community will have greater access to global information, more effective methods of teaching, and necessary skills to function in globally competitive markets. All of these byproducts have the intention of improving the lives of present and future generations of the village’s people.
