Info about the PAHCS Center for Community Development

In a town in Togo, an organization called PAHCS (www.ong-pahcs.org) has been serving the local and surrounding area for almost 20 years in various domains of public service. PAHCS has invested in smaller income-generating projects in order to keep a fulltime staff, but as a local non-profit organization they lack the resources to finance a large project, such as a community center.

Currently the community is at a standstill in all aspects of development. While there are very talented and resourceful individuals, there is no meeting space for the larger public to share information or participate in recurrent discussions and technical trainings. In response to the need for a collective meeting point, PAHCS has designed a 1,040 sq. ft. center that includes a resource library, conference room, computer training area, two classrooms, storage space and two offices for regular staff.

The project is geared towards improving the situation for women, children, students and disabled persons by working with the entire community on issues such as family planning, HIV/AIDS, child trafficking, human rights and life skills (communication, decision-making and relationship skills). It will be a place to share ideas and experiences without discrimination of age, gender, ethnicity; it will be a place for everyone. One community member describes the center as a place where “the community would be its own architect in development by establishing a space to mobilize resources and cultivate conscientious citizens who can make informed decisions”.
