Info about the Outdoor School

The Health School will host two outdoor camps focused on climbing techniques and teaching outdoor living skills to 30 disadvantaged youth. Because it is in a poor rural Ukrainian village where youth are often from dysfunctional families and have few options for constructive activities, staff at the Health School worked with youth to design a program that interests youth. Based on previous experience, staff has discovered that climbing excites youth. Therefore, the project will consist of two climbing-based camps that will be administered by the Health School.

The first camp is for 25 youth ages 12-18 where participants will practice basic climbing skills, learn to cook outdoors and study environmental issues. A river clean-up effort will also take place. The second camp will be for 12 advanced participants and will take place in the mountains of western Ukraine. Leadership and supervision will be provided by six adult certified climbers who will also serve as youth mentors. After the camps are completed, interested youth will participate in a regional climbing competition. The project team will also prepare a project booklet that will be shared not only with campers, but with other organizations interested in conducting a similar project. The community is very supportive of the Outdoor School project. Their 52% contribution consists of climbing and camping equipment, safety equipment and meals. In order to involve additional youth in the project, this Partnership Program request is primarily for additional climbing and camping equipment and transportation to the mountain camp.
