Info about the Nkwene Sports and Recreation Center
The Nkwene community recognizes that HIV/AIDS education and risk reduction are the community's number one priority. Despite efforts in education and awareness programs, the infection rates continue to rise. The community has come to the conclusion that a recreational facility for youth would be a very positive step towards prevention. Involvement in sports and recreational activities could provide avenues to healthy lifestyles for young people. Besides providing youth activities, the Center could also provide the community a place for social gatherings, youth clubs, development programs and entertainment. It is hoped that in addition to recreation and sports, the center will provide youth a safe atmosphere for after school activities, including life skills workshops and tutoring. While the community has been able to come up with thirty percent of the cost of the center by organizing the labor and some local building materials for the center, additional funding will be necessary for construction supplies and for furniture, sports and recreational equipment.
