Nelson grew up on a farm in Goliad, Texas. During his junior year at Texas A&M University, he received an invitation to join a group of Peace Corps trainees destined for Brazil (Brazil 1 PCV Program). In January of 1962, he started Peace Corps training at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After six weeks training at the National 4-H Center, the group flew to Puerto Rico, where they participated in "outbound" (physical fitness and personal assessment) training, plus, hands-on experience with the Puerto Rican Agricultural Extension Program and the 4-H Rural Youth Program. The Brazil 1 group then traveled to Brazil, for intensive language training and in-country technical training. The language training was conducted at "Km. 47", the rural university near Rio de Janeiro. The final phase of training was conducted in Rio, by ABCAR, the Brazilian National Agriculatural Extension Agency, while the Trainees were placed with families in Rio. Upon the completion of training, Nelson was assigned to work with ANCAR-PB, the Agricultural Extension Agency of the Northeast State of Pariaba. From May, 1962 until December of 1963, Nelson worked in the city of Serraria, Paraiba, where he was responsible for the rural youth program - organizing rural youth clubs and helping set up individual projects in agriculture. Nelson later served as a PCV in the city of Rio Verde-Goias and as a PCV Leader in the city of Belo Horizonte, completing his PC service in December of 1965. During the period 1971-74, he served as the Associate Peace Corps Director for the Amazon Region of Brazil. He currently lives in the Northeast Brazilian city of Joao Pessoa, with his Brazilian wife, Gerlane.
