Purpose and Function
The National Peace Corps Association (formerly the National Council of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers) was founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1983 as the national association for the people who have served as volunteers and staff in the United States Peace Corps. The NPCA also welcomes the families and friends of the Peace Corps community to join as associate members. It is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with over 12,000 members and 147 affiliated groups.
The NPCA and its affiliate groups produce global education programs and advocacy campaigns, and they provide community, national and international services. It is governed by a board of directors, and is managed by a professional staff with headquarters in Washington, DC. It is not a part of the United States Peace Corps, which is a federal agency.
Vision
The National Peace Corps Association strives for a world in peace, shaped by understanding and tolerance.
Mission
The mission of the National Peace Corps Association is to lead the Peace Corps community and others to foster peace by working together in service, education and advocacy.
Goals
- Promote the vitality of the Peace Corps and the application of its values
- Establish the NPCA as the essential resource for and about the Peace Corps community
- Enable NPCA members to build upon and extend the Peace Corps experience and values by facilitating their engagement in global issues
Affiliated Groups
Over 150 Peace Corps alumni groups are affiliated with the NPCA. Most of the groups are based in local communities, and others are based on the country of Peace Corps service (called "Friends of" groups). In addition, some networks are based on shared interests. Groups promote global education, provide services in their communities and work with Peace Corps recruiting offices to support recently returned Peace Corps volunteers. Many support development projects overseas, and they sponsor forums and publications for information and issue discussions.
Agency Funding
NPCA receives part of it's finical support from Peace Corps. Records before 2003 don't exist. Below is the funding given by the Peace Corps to NPCA from 2003 to 2010. Grants are not included. Source: FOIA #10-065
