Info about the Mogwase Girl Guides and Boy Scouts

The Ponolopele Anti-Crime Group and the Mogwase Education Development and Support Centre (EDSC) are committed to supporting the wellbeing and development of at-risk learners in a rural village in the North West Province of South Africa. By creating a youth program for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) in the village, the seven members of the Ponolopele Group and four primary school educators, with the support of the EDSC Manager and a Peace Corps Volunteer, plan to alleviate some of the stressors these children experience as well as provide them with important life and leadership skills for the future. These 11 dedicated adults are requesting funds to cover the planning and implementation of a 5-day training as well as start-up costs to launch a local group of the South African Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. The objectives of the training are to develop skills in the management of youth clubs, leadership and counselling, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention training, and life skills development for youth. Among other contributions from the community, the EDSC has provided a free venue for trainings as well as transport for trainees, and the village has offered space in its Zonal Offices for youth group meetings. In the first year of the program, the group members will be 32 OVCs attending four local primary schools. After the first year of the program, the project members will be able to expand the program to include new groups of learners.
