The goal of the Media in the Classroom project is to create a stimulating, English speaking environment for students at a school in Ukraine. There are three objectives for this program: 1) to provide students access to listening to native speakers of English in order to improve their speaking and listening skills, 2) to broaden their world view through the use of educational DVDs and CDs, news programs, and documentary films, and 3) to introduce the use of modern technology in the classroom to the teachers. All eight English teachers and 354 students at the school will benefit from this program.
Using CDs and DVDs in the classroom is an effective and exciting way of studying a foreign language. By hearing and seeing native people speaking English the students can really feel the taste of another culture and improve their speaking and listening skills. The English Department has a number of materials, such as DVDs that go unused due to a lack of equipment. With the help of the Partnership Program the gymnasium will be able to purchase a laptop that will be used in the English classrooms. The laptop will be used to play educational DVDs, news programs, and documentary films.
