At the age of 56, I decided to pursue a lifelong dream and becomse a Peace Corps Volunteer. I was assigned to Ukraine and landed in Kyiv on March 1, 2005. I started three months of training in Vasilkov, a town just outside of Kyiv. During training we learned Russian, Ukrainian culture and acclimated ourselves to living in a very different environment. Ukraine is a wonderful country with good food, good hospitality and head-turningly beautiful women.

When I arrived in Stakhanov, I had the amazing good fortune to live with a wonderful host-family. Slava and Lena Skrebneva live in a very nice house on Degtyarova St. It's just outside of town and on the bus line. They have a large yard and every year it's planted in the spring with flowers and vegetables. The garden is very generous. By the time the end of summer and fall roll around, we have a garden full of tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, potatoes, and cabbage. The time I spent with them was great. I have made life-long friends and gained a new family. I look forward to my next visit very much.

This August I will begin my second Peace Corps assignment in Kazakhstan. I hope the next two years are as amazing as the time I had in Ukraine.
