Info about the Library Book Project
Glazoue is a medium sized village in southern Benin, with a population of approximately 7000. It has the third largest market in Benin and draws from nearly 60,000 in surrounding villages. Unfortunately, this rapidly growing community needs help in providing more educational opportunities to its residents. Families depend on farming for income and must pay for their childrens' education, as well as textbooks. Only about ten percent of the students have books and the lack of books is one of the greatest obstacles in the student's education and creates a huge barrier in the learning process. The community and its students are in desperate need of a well equipped library. The library "la Solution" lacks books and resources. In an effort to address this need the community has requested Peace Corps Partnership for assistance in purchasing 204 books, a fan and a DVD player for the library. Books would include not only textbooks, but repair and self-help books. The DVD player would be used to further promote educational programs and access to community groups and clubs. The community has funded the purchase of the computer and small library fees support the additional purchases related to this project. Through the improvements to the library, it will become a place in which classes and trainings may be provided, in addition to the access so necessary for students as well as everyone in the community.
