Jerry Shey was medically evacuated from Addis Abeba due to severe psychiatric problems on 4/24/73. After two and a half weeks of hospitalization in Frankfurt and DC, Jerry was terminated from PC on 5/12/73 and returned to his home in Iowa. After suffering for four months, he killed himself on Ethiopian New Years Day, 9/11/73.

Although Jerry's death may not exactly meet PC's criteria for dying while serving as a PCV, anyone familiar with the incident would conclude that Jerry's death was a result of his work as a PCV. His symptoms became severe a week before he had to be evacuated. From that time forward, he wasn't the same person. Jerry's spirit died in Ethiopia. If his body had died at the same time, he'd be on the Fallen PCV list. < >
