HIV/AIDS Educational Murals
[edit] Purpose and Approach
The Health Club of the Junior High School will participate in a design contest for a total of four murals to decorate the exterior of their school buildings. The concept for the murals will be illustrations on the prevention of HIV/AIDS through the AB Method – Abstinence and Being Faithful. As the students themselves will be designing the murals, they will have to demonstrate a correct knowledge of the disease and the prevention methods, as well as the ability to translate that knowledge into practice, where by the murals will be judged by their ability to accurately portray these concepts. Each of the first three murals will be a representation of the two prevention methods, as well as the fourth being a map of Ghana with HIV/AIDS statistics as applied to each of the ten regions.
In addition, the two intended school building walls are a perfect platform to provide community-wide education through illustrations about basic HIV/AIDS information. The murals, once completed, will inspire conversation among viewers and provide a platform for open dialogue during which information can be exchanged and cause negative or incorrect ideas about the virus to be less prevalent throughout the area. The literacy and English-speaking rate in the community is low and murals will be an excellent way to disseminate the desired information on a broad scale. The location of the buildings are also ideal for educating travelers as the murals can be easily seen from the main road that leads to no less than twelve substantially-sized communities.
