Girls' Basketball Court and Team

Info about the Girls' Basketball Court and Team
Women's sports in a small mining town in Mauritania are non-existent. The girl's mentoring centers consisting of 30 girls ranging from the ages of 13-18 have taken the initiative to change this. The girls are asking Peace Corps partnership to help them build a basketball court and start a basketball team. The girls would be starting the very first program for girl’s athletics in the Inchiri region. The community has risen to the occasion, with the help of the school director, the youth association, and the girls mentoring center leading the way. Through the construction of the basketball court and the start of the basketball team we are hoping to promote women's participation in sports and to further empower them to take control of their health. Women are not given the same opportunities as men in school and within the community to pursue physical education. The community will contribute to the project by helping prepare the terrain for construction and will be doing whatever they can to help with donating materials for construction. The Peace Corps partnership would forever change the town by supporting the construction of a basketball court and the start of a girl’s basketball team.
