From his service, Gian Paolo is most proud of his role in demystifying reproductive health and HIV/AIDS themes through small group workshops. Given the enthusiastic response from the youth, the school invited him and the health promoter to use school time and space, recognizing the effectiveness and importance of the dialogue taking place in the rural setting. A year later, according to Ministry of Health reports, Santa Marta had the lowest teen pregnancy ratio in the municipality.
He also equipped a “Stove Squad” with the fundamentals for a sustainable environmental microenterprise building to fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves designed in conjunction with the user aimed to improve health by minimizing smoke inhalation in kitchens, reduce deforestation by lowering the demand for firewood and generate economic activity for the youth that design and build each stove.
In addition, he founded, formalized and trained a men’s soccer team to compete in a state-wide league for the first time and organized women’s soccer team to travel in exhibition matches.
Gian Paolo chose to extend and become a volunteer coordinator, where in addition to site development, he planned, budgeted and facilitated eight youth Leadership & Sports Camps, designed training sessions for conferences and supported volunteer initiatives throughout El Salvador.
Finally, he culminated his time with Peace Corps El Salvador as a Master Trainer, where he created conditions for cultural exchange and adaptation, sensitized future volunteers to gender and labor dynamics in rural El Salvador and taught relevant tools and methodologies for sustainable community development.
