First Annual Bulgarian Student Play Writing Competition

Info about the First Annual Bulgarian Student Play Writing Competition
Since 1994, funding for Bulgarian arts has steadily declined, and is reflected in a decreasing body of young creative talent. This is a threat to the documentation and celebration of Bulgarian culture; a rich and vital part of the country's identity. The proposed project, developed by Peace Corps Volunteers and the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NAFTA), provides a creative forum for Bulgarian high school students where they can explore the fine arts while discussing issues that pertain to Eastern European life. Rewards include personal achievement, recognition of creative talent and future educational opportunities. This is the first annual play writing competition. The goal of the project is to create a model, which will serve to sustain the event in subsequent annual competitions, as well as provide a method for similar writing events. NAFTA will host the event and provide space for rehearsals and performance, as well as storage space. They will also provide directors, actors and crew. Peace Corps Volunteers will work directly with staff and students from NAFTA, transferring skills associated with administration of the project. Partnership funds are needed to pay for materials, production, as well as meals and travel expenses for student-playwrights.
