Esmeraldas is a coastal province in Ecuador ("Esmeraldas" meaning "Emeralds" in Spanish). Its capital is Esmeraldas. Esmeraldas has a higher Afro-Ecuadorian population than many other provinces. It is well known for its beaches, including the black sand beach of Mompiche. Though the crime rate tends to be higher in Esmeraldas, volunteers continue to do good work both in the capital city and the rest of the province.
