He worked at several colleges after graduation from college, including Belleville Area College (now Southwest Illinois College); Parks College in Cahokia, Illinois; and Sanford-Brown Business College in Granite City, Illinois. In 1996 he re-enrolled at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville to earn his high school teaching credential.

[edit] Peace Corps

Donald Gilbert served from 1997-1999 as a teacher trainer in the English Language Assistance program in the Philippines. He was part of training group 250 and served in Agusan del Norte on the island of Mindanao. Besides conducting in-service workshops for teachers, he founded a special education program for gifted elementary school children in North Buenavista District, and organized two summer writing camps for high school students. In 1999, he married Maria Luisa Aclan Surilla, a Filipina from Nasipit.

[edit] Post-Peace Corps

Upon completion of service, he moved to Nogales, Arizona and taught for one year at Nogales High School. Near the end of the school year, his father passed away. He decided to return to Granite City to take care of his mother, who was suffering from a heart condition. He found work at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Manchester, Missouri, and taught English there for two years. His mother passed away in September 2001. After completing his second year at John F. Kennedy, he moved to Yuma, Arizona and began teaching at Yuma Catholic High School.

After seven years in Yuma, Don moved to Fresno, CA to teach at the Fresno site of Youthbuild Charter Schools of California, which serves at risk youth, ages 18-24.
