Info about the Dairy Initiative
This project will bring eight milking cows to the village, which has approximately 1,600 people. The majority of people are subsistence farmers, growing what food they can from year to year. Animal husbandry supplements the incomes of some families and was identified as an area in need of improvement.
This project also involves education in how to successfully raise and keep a cow. A seminar will be taught by a member of the community to a group of fifteen community members. Topics include constructing an appropriate shed or outbuilding, feeding and cleaning, breeding, general health care as well as milking and associated hygiene. Successful management of the cows will breed additional cows that will be given to other community members.
Members of the group will contribute 25 percent of the total project cost. The bulk of this contribution will be in cash. This money will purchase the transport of the cows, drugs and materials for the seminar that will teach the group how to raise the dairy cows they are to receive. What this grant is asking from the Peace Corps Partnership Program is the remaining 75% of the total project cost. The amount requested is $3,344. This money will go towards the purchase of the eight cows needed.
