It will also aid in the minor renovation of a recently opened community school located 8 km west.<br /> <br /> The proposed pre-school will serve over 14,000 people from subsistence farming families in 16 surrounding villages. The goal of the school is to increase literacy rates (currently estimated at below 10%) and improve early childhood education where the median years of schooling are 3.2 years for women and 4.8 years for men. The facility will also be used for training fish farmer extension agents in agro forestry and sustainable agriculture, community HIV/AIDS educators, and volunteer pre-school teachers. It will also be used to demonstrate income-generating activities to women’s groups and handicapped residents.<br /> <br /> The single-room community pre-school building located 8 km west presently has over 100 enrolled pre-school and grade 1-4 students and is also used for community PTA meetings, technical and group-specific training sessions.<br /> <br /> Contributions by the motivated community are extensive and will consist of the existing building structure, 1,000 library books, construction-related labor including hauling building materials, building pit latrines, making bricks, installing roofing systems, assembling furniture and painting the building.</div>
