Info about the Community Park for Youth Development and Environmental Conservation
San Jose is a low-income rural community in the province of Herrera, Panama. It is young community with 60% under the age of 35 and children under 18 comprising 30%. San Jose offers no formal public space or facilities for children and youth to constructively spend their time. The only place they have to play is an 18mx14m schoolyard. Where organized team sports, such as soccer or baseball exist, the teams have to travel 20 minutes to get to a playing field. San Jose has identified the need for a community park. A committee has already been formed to manage this project. This area of Panama has experience rampant deforestation, which has a negative impact on the environment. Therefore the park will also include an environmental conservation element. The park will provide a safe and health place for recreational activities but encourage the community to practice environmental conservation. The community is donating the land, labor, meals, trees, and tools for this project. They are requesting assistance in purchasing construction material from Partnership.
