The objectives of the project are as follows: contribute to the reduction of poverty within the vulnerable populations of a community in Burkina Faso, specifically the young women, by opening a literacy center, which, over the span of eight months, will serve to teach thirty young women how to read and write and also inform them on the themes of gender and development, women's rights, healthy reproduction practices, and how to start and manage a small business; and install a community library, which will serve to further the education of the thirty young women as well as the entire population of the town.
The community has generously donated a building for the library, ensuring that they are deeply involved in the outcome as well as the long-term success of the project. Semi-annual fees will be collected from the library members, enabling more literacy classes in the future. We are requesting Partnership Program funds for the training of the community members responsible for the successful implementation of the project (the literacy center leader and teachers, the librarian), the construction of the literacy center, all materials (chairs, desks, blackboards, textbooks, supplies) for the literacy center, and materials (chairs, desks, books, shelves) for the community library.
