Info about the Community Center

The people of a village in the San Cristobal Province of the Dominican Republic are working towards the construction of their own Community Center. The village of 1,200 inhabitants lacks a solid structure to hold local group meetings, Pre-school classes, Cacao Grower's Association trainings, income-generation activities, cultural ceremonies, and other community activities. The Community Center will provide a safe, productive, and sufficient space to further educate community members in the areas of health, literacy, organic farming, business development and other community development projects. Additionally, this community center will provide a safe haven for community members in case of a hurricane or a major storm. In a community where less than half of the adults attended high school, early education, educational support, and continued education for adults is a necessity.

The lack of potable water in the village creates the urgent need to inform and assemble as a community to solve the extensive health risks posed by the contaminated water supply. The development of income-generation and micro-business opportunities within the Women and Youth Groups are essential to local economic growth. Village children are hungry for learning and each day dozens of children crowd onto an open porch to read the small collection of children's books available. An adequate and well-stocked meeting space will inspire, encourage, and support these critical community development initiatives. Led by the Cacao Grower's Association, the community will provide the land, a portion of the needed building materials, and the unskilled labor. The Community Center Project requires Partnership Program support to supply additional material resources and the skilled labor required to build the Community Center.
