One service that community members in a small town in the Dominican Republic lack is an ambulance service that provides transportation to a hospital. This project proposes the creation of an ambulance service for 9 communities comprised of approximately 11,700 people. It consists of purchasing an ambulance and equipment, capacitating community members in first aid, driving and organizational skills, and creating a communication system. The creation of a community ambulance will provide faster, cheaper and easier transportation and will in turn enable community members to better access to medical care. Currently, when someone has an emergency and needs to go to the hospital, he or she has to search for someone with a motorcycle to transport them to the hospital, and usually has to pay more than a month's salary.

The creation of a community ambulance is an idea that came from within the community and the community youth group will implement it. This project has enormous support by community members, local governments and local organizations. Local contributions include economic and human resources to help capacitate and purchase the ambulance. Once functioning, community members will pay a monthly quota to maintain and strengthen the ambulance and its service.

Aside from improving access to medical care, this project will result in 43 community members will new skills and capabilities, and collaboration between 9 communities, 2 organizations and 4 local governments. Additionally, the implementation of this project will show community members that change is possible and it will empower and motivate them.
