Info about the Celebrando el Sur Youth Conference

In order to provide southwestern youth with the skills and confidence necessary to overcome the challenges that they face and to promote diversity in their communities, eighteen Peace Corps Volunteers working in the region have united to organize Celebrando el Sur (“Celebrating the South”), a weekend-long youth conference to be held in Neyba. The principle theme of the conference will be community leadership, and conference sub themes will include: 1.) Celebrating the Dominican Republic and the island of Hispaniola; 2.) The world and its peoples; 3) Diversity, gender, racism, and stereotypes; and 4.) Sustainable community leadership.

In addition to positively and directly impacting the 54 youth that attend the conference, hundreds of youth will indirectly benefit when those youth return and, with the guidance of volunteers, reproduce conference workshops and activities in their home communities. Within the 18 communities represented in the southwest youth conference, only a few have well-established youth groups working on community initiatives and none have community groups addressing diversity issues. All communities will benefit from the seeds of peace and understanding that will be planted at this year’s conference
