Cape Coast Field Trip
Purpose and Approach
The purpose of the field trip is to expand the minds of the students since most of the students have never left their villages. This field trip will provide the students with the experience that is needed to grasp the reality that their village is but a small part of the larger whole that is Ghana. This "adventure" will serve as motivation for them because they will become aware of the fact that they have a lot more to learn because there is another world that surrounds the small world they know as their home.
Objective
The one-day itinerary involves 96 students and 3 teachers (including the PCV) visiting Cape Coast slave castle, the Elimina slave castle, the University of Cape Coast and Kakum National Park.
At each of the slave castles, the students will participate in a tour of the castle led by a tour guide. The aim is to educated and dispel any misinformation about the slave trade in their own country.
At the University of Cape Coast, the students will take a tour of the university campus. The primary objective is to motivate the students and show them that their education is the most important thing in their control, and to encourage them to study harder to enrich their minds and better their chances of finding a job. The students will be permitted to sit in and observe select classes. The students will also be introduced to the wide range of courses available at the university.
The visit to Kakum National Park will allow them to witness the wildlife that is merely pictured in their books in their natural habitat in one of Ghana's most well-renowned wildlife parks.
Action Plan
The PTA executives were proactively involved in the planning of the project. They were responsible for making transportation arrangements and contacting the host destinations to ensure that the objectives of the field trip were realized.
1. Establish a Project Planning Committee. 2. Plan meetings with school staff and PTA. 3. Make and confirm transportation arrangements. 4. Make and confirm reservations at trip destinations. 5. Brief students about the purpose of the destinations. 6. Undertake the trip. 7. Feedback session with the students to discuss their experiences.
