[edit] Description of Service
Country Served: Islamic Republic of Mauritania, West Africa
Years of Service: 9/99 to 12/01
Primary Site: Bouboudiana, Brakna Region (Haratin village along the Senegal River)
Primary Job/Sector/Work: Community Agro-forestry Volunteer
Languages spoken: Hassaniya (Arabic-Berber dialect) and French
Other countries traveled during service: Morocco, Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, Cote d' Ivoire, and Ghana
Best memory of service: About six weeks before the end of my Peace Corps service, 9/11 happened. All the other volunteers in my group were worried about what was going to happen to us. Most of us had made post-service travel plans and were afraid that we were going to be evacuated since we were living in a Muslim country. Fortunately that didn't happen. The only news coverage I received was BBC International on my short wave radio. So I had seen no visual images of the Twin Tower collapse like many did around the world.
