Many of the students in the Secondary School play various sports, and basketball is included among the school’s teams. Currently, the school’s basketball teams use a distant, dilapidated shipping storage area as a basketball court. The current court is in very poor condition. There are numerous holes in the floor that have lead to many ankle injuries, and the rusted shipping containers that mark one of the boundaries of the court have cut and scarped the players. Additionally, the current court is far from the school and the players that practice in the morning are often late to their studies. The owner of the storage area has also expressed desire to close down the current basketball court. Without a place to play, the basketball program at Secondary School will certainly shut down. However, the local community members recently petitioned the local government for an area to build a new court. Their initial location requests were able to acquire a location that is both close to the school and the center of the town. A new basketball court will keep the school’s basketball program alive, allow the players to practice and play in a much safer environment, and encourage new young people to take up the game.
