Allegra Toriano is also known as aka Salimata Sané. She was a TEFL Teacher in the C.E.G. (high school) of Oussouye. Her main job was teaching English to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year high school students. In addition, she hosted an English Language Club in school where students met informally once a week to discuss whatever they wanted in English. During her 4th trip back to Oussouye in 2004, she ran into two of her favorite students who recounted many of the fun times they had together. Besides doing regular English work, she did skits, played games, sang songs, and told stories.
One of the highlights of her stay in Oussouye was when she entered a wrestling competition in her region. After she won her first match, the king of Oussouye gave her 100 CFA (about 12 cents at the time), and heralded her as the only 'alooloomo' (white person) to have wrestled.
Upon her return stateside, she got her Master's degree in Second Language Acquisition from Columbia Univ. Teacher's College. In 1986, she moved back to Milwaukee. Since her return she has taught ESL in academia. Since 2002, she has her own business teaching ESL on a corporate level and to non-English speaking adults throughout the city.
Currently she's active on the Milwaukee Peace Corps Assoc. board (where she just finished a three-year tenure as president) and most recently on the Natiional Peace Corps Assoc. board.
Allegra is most interested in promoting the Peace Corps whenever possible because she sees it as a tool that will help improve the image of Americans and America throughout the world.
