Worked with self-help community groups independently and was assigned to the Kenyan Ministry of Water Development, Murang’s District Office. Projects included a gravity flow pipe system from a water treatment plant serving 15,000 people in a semi-arid region; spring protection; ferro cement water tanks for rainwater harvesting; and shallow well construction and small-scale irrigation schemes. Responsibilities included supervising surveys, designing water systems, estimating costs, organizing and supervising construction labor, and instructing small groups on implementation and maintenance of water systems. Secondary activities included teaching mathematics to engineering students at a local college of technology. Compiled and edited a Water Sector Reference manual for use by the U.S. Peace Corps volunteers.
