During the 2009 school year a group of 30, 5th to 9th grade students from a school in El Salvador, will join together with school staff and community leaders to participate in a progressive environmental course. Unlike other educational courses, this course will focus on student learning and service in the community.

The goal of this course is to educate students and community members of the causes and effects of environmental degradation; learn alternative environmentally sustainable management strategies; enhance the environmental conditions of San Jose las Flores; improve the quality of living of community members; encourage youth volunteerism; and develop leadership and project management skills.

The course consists of weekly participatory environmental educational classes that will focus on the Ministry of Education based science and social studies learning objectives (with a pre & post test to monitor their learning); various environmental projects and activities (composting, lombriculture, efficient wood-burning stove, recycling campaign, and tree plantings) that the students organize and manage at the school or community level; and a series of field-trips to explore the biodiversity of animals and ecosystems in El Salvador, as well as an agricultural university to study sustainable farming techniques.

The community is able to contribute materials, transportation and man-power for composting, lombriculture, tree planting materials, the stove project, and recycling projects, along with meals for the field trips, and weekly classes. They also will be fundraising money for transport and entrance costs to P.N. Los Volcanes. We are seeking funds from the Partnership Program for transportation costs for the field trips and park entrance fees.
